Mamafubedu is a township in the eastern Free State, next to the small town of Petrus Steyn. The surrounding region is mainly farmland, with large, level fields of maize and other crops. It is one of the country's grain-producing areas, and on the map the fields show up as a broad, quiet backdrop.
The township itself is laid out in blocks of small residential plots, with streets in regular rows and a few main roads linking it to the town and to the district roads beyond. The divide between township and town, a legacy of South African planning, is still visible from above.
