Manaus stands on the north bank of the Rio Negro, a few kilometres above where it joins the Solimões to form the Amazon. On the map the river is enormous, a wide band of water along the southern edge of the city. The urban area spreads north from the waterfront toward the forest, its streets interrupted everywhere by igarapés, the small creeks that wind through the city.
The historic centre near the port keeps a compact grid of streets from the rubber boom, when the city became one of the richest in Brazil. To the west, the Rio Negro Bridge, more than three kilometres long, crosses to the opposite bank. East of the city, at the Meeting of the Waters, the dark Rio Negro and the pale Solimões flow side by side for kilometres without mixing.
Manaus is the capital of Amazonas and the largest city in the Brazilian Amazon, reached mostly by river or air. Its Teatro Amazonas, an opera house completed in 1896, is a legacy of the rubber era.
