Market Harborough grew up as a market town on the River Welland, close to the border between Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. On the map, the old centre is a long, slightly curving high street. Burgage-style plots run back from it, and the church of St Dionysius stands where the street widens.
Next to the church is the Old Grammar School, a small timber-framed building from 1614 raised on wooden pillars. Market traders once sheltered underneath it. To the north, a branch of the Grand Union Canal ends at a basin, and its line cuts cleanly through the suburbs. The river winds more loosely through the town, and the railway and bypass add firm, straight lines.
