Martil lies on Morocco's Mediterranean coast a few kilometres east of Tétouan, where the Martil River reaches the sea. From above the town is defined by its long, smooth beach, a gentle curve running for kilometres along the shoreline, and by the river channel at its edge. Streets form a fairly regular grid behind the seafront, filling the flat coastal plain.
The town once served as the port of Tétouan, and boats used the river to reach inland. Today Martil is known above all as a seaside town, much visited in summer, with a promenade along the beach and newer apartment blocks spreading along the coast. Faculties of Abdelmalek Essaâdi University located here have also shaped its growth.
