Masuda sits at the western end of Shimane Prefecture, where a narrow coastal plain opens between the mountains and the Sea of Japan. The Takatsu River, often named among the clearest rivers in Japan, winds down from the interior and reaches the sea here. So does the smaller Masuda River. The city's streets fill the flat ground between the two, with steep wooded hills close behind.
The city is linked to two famous figures. One is the fifteenth-century painter Sesshū, and gardens attributed to him survive at the temples of Ikō-ji and Manpuku-ji. The other is the classical poet Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, who is honoured at a local shrine. A newer landmark is the Shimane Arts Center, known as Grand Toit, roofed in local reddish Sekishu tiles.
