Mayagüez lies on the west coast of Puerto Rico, on a broad bay opening onto the Mona Passage. From above, the city sits between the sea and a line of green hills. The historic centre is laid out as a grid near the coast, and neighbourhoods climb inland into the valleys. The Yagüez River reaches the sea close to the centre and gives the city its name.
Mayagüez is known as the Sultana del Oeste, the sultana of the west, and is home to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, the island's main engineering campus. A Mayagüez map poster shows the campus as a distinct area of buildings and paths on the edge of the centre, beside the old plaza and the port.
The coast gives the map its strongest line. Piers and harbour structures stand out along the shore, and the highway runs along the coast north and south.
