Medford sits in the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon, surrounded by the hills of the Cascade and Siskiyou ranges. The land is open and fairly flat, so the city spreads comfortably across the valley floor. Orchards, vineyards and foothills mark its outer edges, and Roxy Ann Peak rises on the eastern side.
Three strong lines run through the map from north to south. The first is Bear Creek, a green stream corridor followed by a long greenway path. Beside it runs Interstate 5, and the historic downtown grid lies close by, built around the railway that gave the town its start in the 1880s. Newer subdivisions curve outward from this spine into the hills.
Medford is closely linked with pears. The valley's orchards made it known nationally, and the mail-order fruit company Harry & David grew up here. A Medford map poster balances the tidy blocks of the centre with the looser streets of the outskirts and the long green line of the creek between them.

The historic centre grew up around the railway in the late nineteenth century, and its compact grid of blocks still sits at the heart of the map.

On the east side, streets begin to curve and climb toward Roxy Ann Peak, and the regular grid dissolves into winding lanes and larger lots.
