El mapa
Medicine Hat Map Poster & Print
Medicine Hat sits in southeastern Alberta, where the South Saskatchewan River has cut a wide valley into the flat prairie. The downtown lies on the valley floor beside the river, and newer neighbourhoods spread across the upland plateau above.
The coulees give the map its character. These steep-sided ravines cut into the city, and streets stop at their edges, so the built-up area breaks into separate sections joined by a few roads. Seven Persons Creek winds through the southern part of town and adds a thinner, twisting line to the pattern.
Natural gas reserves beneath the city earned it the nickname the Gas City, and Rudyard Kipling famously described it as having all hell for a basement. The Saamis Tepee, a very large steel tepee, stands on the upland above the valley. A Medicine Hat map poster shows how river and coulee shape everything else around them.

Coulees
Steep ravines divide the upland neighbourhoods. On the map they appear as empty channels that the street grid stops against.
Seven Persons Creek
A smaller creek winds through the southern districts. Its tight bends add detail and texture to that part of the city.
