Melun is the prefecture of Seine-et-Marne, about forty-five kilometres southeast of Paris. The Seine runs through the middle of the town, and in the centre it divides around an island, the Île Saint-Étienne, which forms the historic heart of the place. On the map, the river and its bridges are the first things you see.
The old town spreads from the northern bank in a tight web of streets, while the southern side extends in larger blocks and later residential districts. The island between them carries a small cluster of streets and landmarks, including the church of Notre-Dame. Beyond the centre, the town reaches towards the forest of Fontainebleau to the south and the wide farmland of Brie.
Melun gave its name to Brie de Melun, one of the two Brie cheeses with protected status, and the château of Vaux-le-Vicomte lies a short distance away.
