Melur lies northeast of Madurai, on the road that runs on towards Tiruchirappalli. From above, the town is a tight cluster of streets around its main road. Around it the pattern loosens quickly into a patchwork of fields, tanks and field boundaries. On a black-and-white print that contrast is the whole story: a small, dense core with open farmland on every side.
The land around Melur is flat farmland broken by bare rocky outcrops. The granite hills of this part of Madurai district stand out as blank shapes among the fine lines of cultivated plots. Irrigation water from the Periyar–Vaigai system reaches the area through channels, and on a map these channels read as long, faint strokes that the town's streets sometimes follow and sometimes cross.
