Menden lies in the Märkisches Kreis of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the northern edge of the Sauerland where the hill country begins to fall away toward the Ruhr. The small Hönne river runs through the town from south to north, and on the map, the valley's shape is obvious: development stretches along the river, and forested slopes rise to the east and west.
The historic centre sits by the Hönne, a compact area of old streets around the parish church of St. Vincent, with fragments of the medieval town layout still visible. Beyond it, residential districts spread onto the lower slopes and into the neighbouring villages that now belong to Menden.
