Milwaukie sits on the east bank of the Willamette River, immediately south of Portland in Oregon. From above, a compact downtown lies right on the river, with a regular grid of residential streets rising behind it. Johnson Creek and Kellogg Creek cut through the city on their way to the Willamette, adding irregular green corridors to the grid.
The city is known as the place where the Bing cherry was developed in the nineteenth century, a history still recalled locally. More recently, the MAX Orange Line light rail brought a new line across the map, running from Portland through Milwaukie's downtown and south toward Oak Grove.
