Minya lies on the west bank of the Nile in Middle Egypt, roughly halfway between Cairo and Luxor, and its map is shaped by the river. The city stretches in a long north–south band between the water and the fertile fields, with a corniche running along the Nile and main streets laid out parallel to it.
The Nile valley is narrow here, and beyond the river the cultivated land gives way abruptly to desert. Cliffs rise above the valley on the east bank. To the south lie the rock-cut tombs of Beni Hasan and the remains of Tell el-Amarna, the city built by the pharaoh Akhenaten, both among the most important ancient sites in the region.
Irrigation canals run parallel to the river through the farmland west of the city, and a railway and highway follow the valley, linking Minya with the rest of Egypt.
