Monopoli lies on the Adriatic coast of Apulia, southeast of Bari. Its map is shaped by the sea. The historic centre juts out along the shore, a dense tangle of white lanes enclosed by walls on the seaward side, with a small old harbour tucked inside. Next to it, the newer town spreads out in a much more regular grid.
Along the edge of the old town, the Castello di Carlo V stands on a point above the water, and the cathedral rises from the middle of the maze of lanes. South and north of the town, the coastline breaks into small coves and rocky inlets. Inland, a web of narrow roads links countless farmsteads and olive groves across the countryside.
