Montagu sits at the western end of the Klein Karoo in the Western Cape, in a valley hemmed in by the folded sandstone ridges of the Langeberg range. The town is laid out as a neat grid of streets on the valley floor, with the Kingna and Keisie rivers close by. On almost every side, the mountains rise abruptly beyond the last houses.
Montagu was founded in 1851 and named after John Montagu, then colonial secretary of the Cape. It is known for its restored nineteenth-century houses, its orchards and vineyards, and the hot mineral springs just outside the centre. The main approach from the west runs through Cogmanskloof, a narrow gorge where the road passes through a short tunnel built by Thomas Bain in the 1870s.

The Kingna and Keisie rivers flow near the town. Their green banks and curving courses soften the geometry of the streets and orchards.
