Montego Bay, on the northwest coast of Jamaica, is the capital of Saint James Parish and one of the island's main tourism centres. The town follows the curve of its bay, with the harbour and downtown at the southern end and beaches and hotels stretching north along the shore.
Sangster International Airport occupies a long strip of flat land by the sea at the northeastern edge of the town, its runway a sharp straight line along the coast. Gloucester Avenue, known as the Hip Strip, runs beside the water, and Doctor's Cave Beach is one of its best-known stretches of sand. Inland, the ground rises quickly into hills, and the streets begin to wind.
