Moundou is one of the largest cities in Chad and the main centre of the country's south-west. It lies on the Logone Occidental river, and on a map the river forms a long, gentle curve along one side of the city. Streets extend from the riverbank across flat ground, forming a broad and fairly regular network that gradually loosens into more scattered settlements at the edges.
The city has long been linked to cotton and to a well-known brewery, and its economy has shaped the layout of main roads, industrial sites and markets. The landscape around Moundou is open savanna and farmland, so the city's shape is defined mainly by the river and the routes leading out towards other towns.
