Mugumu is the headquarters of Serengeti District in Tanzania's Mara Region, sitting on rolling grassland just west of Serengeti National Park. On a map the town appears as a loose cluster of streets and compounds around a few main roads, with smallholdings and scattered homesteads spreading into the savanna beyond. The layout is informal, shaped by routes rather than a planned grid.
Its position makes Mugumu a gateway town. Roads lead east toward the park boundary and the protected lands around it, and west toward Lake Victoria and the rest of the Mara Region. Seasonal streams and low rises break up the surrounding country, and the contrast between cultivated land and the wide open reserve is one of the defining features of the area.
