Muizenberg sits on the northern shore of False Bay in Cape Town, pressed into a thin strip between the mountains and the sea. From above, the coastline is the main event. A long, gently curving beach runs east toward the Cape Flats, and the railway line follows the shore closely. Streets climb the slopes behind in short, steep rows.
The beach is widely regarded as the birthplace of surfing in South Africa. Its gentle, consistent waves and row of colourful bathing boxes are known far beyond the Cape. Just to the east, the Zandvlei estuary opens into the bay and adds a pocket of water to the map. In 1795 the area also gave its name to the Battle of Muizenberg.

The suburban railway runs right along the water's edge, a thin line squeezed between the beach and the houses. It's one of the area's defining features.
Zandvlei estuary
East of the village, the Zandvlei wetland and lagoon interrupt the street pattern with an irregular body of water where the estuary meets False Bay.
