Myślenice lies in Lesser Poland, about thirty kilometres south of Kraków, where the lowlands start to rise into the foothills of the Beskids. The Raba river runs along the town, and the historic centre sits on higher ground above it. The centre is built around a rectangular market square, as in many old Polish towns, with streets leaving each corner toward the surrounding districts.
The main road from Kraków to Zakopane, known as the Zakopianka, passes Myślenice. For many travellers heading to the Tatras, the town is the first place where the mountains start. Just above the town is Chełm, a wooded hill with walking trails and a small ski area, which makes Myślenice popular with weekend visitors from Kraków.
