Naha sits on the southwestern coast of Okinawa Island and fills almost every piece of level ground between the East China Sea and the low hills inland. From above, the city is a fine web of narrow, irregular streets rather than a grid. Small rivers, the Kokuba among them, wind toward the harbour. The airport runway extends along the coast to the south.
Shuri Castle, seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom, crowns the hill at the eastern side of town, where streets bend to follow the slopes. It was damaged by fire in 2019 and is being rebuilt. A Naha map poster links that royal hill to the port below, showing how the kingdom's capital and its trading harbour were joined.
Through the middle runs Kokusai-dori, a shopping street that became the heart of the postwar city. Above it, the elevated Yui Rail monorail traces a looping line from the airport to Shuri. On a monochrome map, the monorail and the rivers are the main lines that stand out against the packed streets.
