Nankoku lies in Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, just east of the prefectural capital. It occupies much of the Kochi plain, one of the few broad areas of flat land on the island's mountainous Pacific side, and from above it looks less like a single town than a loose network of settlements among fields.
The city is home to Kochi Ryoma Airport, whose runway appears near the coast as a long, sharp line against the softer agricultural pattern. The warm climate here has long supported productive farming, and the plain is well known for its rice and greenhouse vegetables. The Monobe River crosses the area on its way to the sea.
