Nansio is the principal town of Ukerewe, the largest island in Lake Victoria. From above, the lake dominates everything. Water fills most of the frame, the shoreline breaks into small bays and headlands, and the town gathers around its harbour. Roads lead inland across the island's green, gently rolling interior toward farms and fishing villages.
Life in Nansio is closely tied to the lake. Ferries link the town with Mwanza on the mainland, and fishing is central to the local economy. The street pattern is simple, with a small grid near the port and looser lanes on the edges. Smaller islands and rocky outcrops lie off the coast, adding scattered shapes of land to the water around them.
