Napa lies at the southern end of the Napa Valley in Northern California, where the Napa River slows and winds toward San Pablo Bay. The city grew up along the river as a port and trading town, and its downtown still clusters around a series of bends. Beyond the centre, grids of residential streets spread across the flat valley floor, bordered by hills to the east and west.
The river shapes much of the map. Near downtown it forms a pronounced loop known as the Oxbow, where a flood bypass channel was built as part of a major flood-protection project. Along the water, the Oxbow Public Market and the riverfront give new life to former industrial land, and footpaths trace both banks.
Napa is the gateway to one of the world's best-known wine regions, and vineyards begin just beyond the city limits, running north up the valley. The city was struck by an earthquake in 2014, which damaged many historic buildings. A Napa map poster shows the river, the old grid and the valley roads in one clean composition.
