Natal Map Poster
Natal stretches along the Atlantic on Brazil's northeastern corner, and the Potengi River meets the sea at its northern end. The oldest neighbourhoods cluster near that river mouth, while the city runs south along the shore through a chain of beaches towards Ponta Negra. On a map the coastline is a clean, gently curving edge, and the estuary cuts a broad opening across the top.
Between the older centre and the southern beaches lies the Parque das Dunas, a large protected area of forested dunes that appears as an empty band beside dense street grids. At Ponta Negra, the Morro do Careca, a tall bare dune, marks the southern end of the urban beach. The city was founded on Christmas Day 1599, which is where its name comes from.
At the river mouth stands the star-shaped Forte dos Reis Magos, begun by the Portuguese in 1598, and a short way upstream the cable-stayed Newton Navarro Bridge crosses to the northern shore. The star-shaped fort stands on the reefs at the river mouth. It is a small, precise geometric shape surrounded by water, easy to pick out even at a wide city scale.
