Naumburg lies in the south of Saxony-Anhalt, close to where the Unstrut river joins the Saale. It is the centre of the Saale-Unstrut wine region, one of Germany's most northerly, where vineyards climb the slopes above the river valleys. From above, the medieval town forms a compact oval, with the cathedral quarter on one side and the market town on the other.
Naumburg Cathedral is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, known especially for its thirteenth-century sculptures, including the figure of Uta von Naumburg. The town also has a small historic tram line that loops around the old centre. Outside the ring, later districts spread toward the Saale valley and the surrounding hills.
