Nazaré Paulista lies in the hills northeast of São Paulo city, and its map is dominated by water. The Atibainha reservoir, part of the Cantareira system that supplies the metropolitan area, spreads through the valleys around the town in long, branching arms that reach deep into the surrounding hills.
The town centre is small and sits close to the water, with streets that curve to follow the slopes. Outside the centre, roads wind between wooded hills, weekend houses and small farms, many of them set along the reservoir's many inlets. The result is an intricate, irregular shoreline that fills much of the frame.
