Neath is a market town in South Wales, on the River Neath where the valley opens toward Swansea Bay. The river runs past the town centre on its way to the sea, and the valley rises steeply on either side. From above, Neath is a compact centre with terraced streets spreading along the valley floor and up the lower slopes.
The area has a long industrial history, and it shows on the map in the form of canals. The Neath Canal and the Tennant Canal run through the valley, drawn as thin lines parallel to the river. The ruins of Neath Abbey, once one of the largest monasteries in Wales, lie to the west, and the remains of Neath Castle stand near the centre.
