Neuilly-sur-Seine lies just west of Paris, framed by the Bois de Boulogne on one side and a bend of the Seine on the other. Through its centre runs the Avenue Charles-de-Gaulle, part of the historic axis that leads from the Louvre through the Arc de Triomphe to La Défense. On a map this straight, wide avenue divides Neuilly in two with remarkable clarity.
Either side of the avenue, the streets form a calm, regular grid of residential blocks, with many private gardens and quiet squares. On the river stands the Île de la Jatte, shared with Levallois-Perret, where Georges Seurat painted A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. The Pont de Neuilly carries the axis across the Seine toward the towers.
