New Port Richey lies on Florida's Gulf Coast in Pasco County, north of Tampa. The defining feature on its map is the Pithlachascotee River, known locally as the Cotee. It curves through the middle of town in tight bends before it widens toward the Gulf. The historic downtown sits on its banks, a compact set of blocks beside the water.
Next to downtown, Sims Park runs along the river and gives the centre a green edge. The Hacienda Hotel, built in the 1920s when the town drew visitors from the film world, stands nearby. To the west, residential streets break into finger canals and cul-de-sacs typical of coastal Florida, while US 19 carries a straight commercial strip north to south.
