Newington lies just south-west of Hartford, Connecticut, and its map is marked by one very strong line: the Berlin Turnpike, which runs straight through the eastern part of town carrying US 5 and Route 15. Shops and car dealerships line it, while most of the town's residential streets lie to the west.
Toward the western edge the land rises to a traprock ridge with woods and trails, part of the long ridge system of central Connecticut. Near the town centre, Mill Pond Park surrounds a small pond with a waterfall, a green space that appears as a quiet gap in the street grid.
