Like much of the outer metropolitan area, it has grown quickly over recent decades as the capital expanded eastward. The map shows that growth plainly: blocks of housing laid out on sandy land, streets filling spaces that were once open.
The surrounding landscape belongs to the Niayes, a coastal belt of dunes and shallow depressions where groundwater sits close to the surface and market gardening has long been common. On a map, these hollows and green patches interrupt the street pattern, leaving gaps and curving edges. Toward the north, the land runs out to the Atlantic shoreline.
