Nichelino lies directly south of Turin, separated from the city by the Sangone torrent on its northern edge. On a map it is mostly a dense residential town that developed rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century, when workers came to the Turin region for its industries, especially the car plants.
The town's most distinctive feature lies at its southern end. The Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, a Savoy hunting lodge designed by Filippo Juvarra in the eighteenth century, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy. Its star-shaped plan and surrounding park are unmistakable from above.
A long straight avenue runs from Turin straight to the palace, a formal axis cutting through the suburban streets. A Nichelino map poster places the everyday grid of the town alongside that Baroque geometry, with the river along one edge and parkland along the other.
