Nobres is a municipality in Mato Grosso, north of the state capital Cuiabá, in the transition zone between the cerrado and the southern edge of the Amazon basin. On a map, the town is a regular grid of streets beside the main highway. Around it lie farmland, ranch roads and a landscape shaped by limestone ridges and rivers.
The region is best known for its unusually clear rivers and springs, where the limestone geology filters the water. That has made Nobres a destination for ecotourism, with visitors floating and snorkelling alongside fish in transparent pools. The same limestone supports local quarrying and cement production, which also shapes the economy of the area.
