North Little Rock lies on the north bank of the Arkansas River, directly across from the state capital, and the river is the defining line of its map. Several bridges, from road crossings to pedestrian spans, connect the two downtowns, while the city itself spreads north and east in a mixture of older grid streets, rail yards and wooded suburban neighbourhoods.
The historic Argenta district forms the core near the river, and the city's railroad heritage shows in the long lines of track and yards. Burns Park, one of the largest city parks in the country, occupies a broad stretch of riverfront, and the Big Dam Bridge nearby carries walkers and cyclists over the Murray Lock and Dam.
In the Lakewood area stands the Old Mill, a replica water mill that appears in the opening of Gone with the Wind.
