Nova Mamoré is a town in the far west of Rondônia, close to the Bolivian border and to the Mamoré river that gives it its name. It grew as part of the settlement of the Brazilian Amazon in the late twentieth century. Its map reflects that planned origin: a compact grid of streets at the centre, with long, straight roads running out into the countryside.
From above, the wider municipality shows the typical layout of Amazon settlement. Side roads branch at regular intervals from the main routes and create a fishbone pattern of farm plots and pastures. The town lies on the road to Guajará-Mirim, and the forests and rivers of the frontier region are never far away.

The main highway heading south toward Guajará-Mirim draws a strong line across the map. It connects the town to the rest of the frontier region near the Bolivian border.
