Nuoro sits on a high granite plateau in central Sardinia, in the Barbagia region, far from the island's resort coasts. The town stretches along a ridge, and its streets bend to fit the edge of the high ground. To the east, Monte Ortobene rises behind a valley, covered in woods and crowned by a bronze statue of the Redeemer. It is a local landmark and a place of pilgrimage.
Nuoro is famous as a literary town. It was the birthplace of Grazia Deledda, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1926, and her family house is now a museum. The town is also known for the painters, poets and scholars it produced in the twentieth century, which earned it a reputation as the cultural centre of inland Sardinia.

Road to Ortobene
A winding road climbs from the town toward Monte Ortobene. Its switchbacks draw a distinctive coiled line at the eastern edge of the map.
Old quarters
The historic centre, where Grazia Deledda grew up, keeps a dense tangle of narrow lanes. It contrasts sharply with the more regular modern blocks around it.
