Nyköping is the seat of Södermanland, on Sweden's east coast south-west of Stockholm. The Nyköpingsån river runs straight through the centre and opens into a long inlet of the Baltic. This gives the map a clear line that ties the town to the sea. The streets on both banks are arranged in a regular grid, with the harbour and bay to the south-east.
The town is known for Nyköpingshus, the castle beside the river, and the Nyköping Banquet of 1317. At that banquet King Birger had his brothers imprisoned, and the event became one of the most famous episodes in Swedish medieval history. Today the harbour is a popular summer spot, and Stockholm Skavsta Airport lies just outside town.

South-east of the centre, the river opens into a long bay with islands and an irregular, rocky shoreline. It gives the lower part of the map a strong, open shape.
