Oldenburg was the capital of a county, then a duchy and grand duchy, and later a free state until 1946. Its historic centre is small and oval, surrounded by the Wallanlagen, a ring of parks and paths laid out where the fortifications once stood. Inside, the streets form an irregular medieval pattern that became one of the first pedestrian zones in Germany in 1967.
South of the old town lie the palace and the Schlossgarten, a landscape park in the English style with ponds and winding paths. Further south and east the Hunte River and its harbour meet the Küstenkanal, the coastal canal leading west towards the Ems, so the map gains straight water lines alongside the river's curves.
Beyond the ramparts the city spreads out in leafy residential districts with detached houses and wide streets, and the university, named after Carl von Ossietzky, lies to the west.
