Osório lies on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul, in the strip of land between the Serra Geral escarpment and the Atlantic. The town itself sits a short distance inland, close to the foot of the hills. On a map, it is surrounded by water: a chain of coastal lagoons spreads across the flat land around it, linked by channels and wetlands.
The municipality is widely known for the Osório wind farm, one of the largest in Brazil when it opened, with rows of turbines standing on the plain near the lagoons. Osório also sits at an important road junction, where the highway from Porto Alegre meets the coastal route along the south of the country.
