Ostrava does not gather around a single core. Seen from above, it is a patchwork of former mining settlements joined by rail lines and wide roads, with the Ostravice, Opava and Oder rivers meeting within its northern districts. The old centre of Moravian Ostrava sits on the west bank of the Ostravice, while Silesian Ostrava rises on the opposite side, a division that once marked a historic border.
For much of the twentieth century this was the country's centre of coal and steel. The blast furnaces of Lower Vítkovice now stand as a preserved industrial area with a concert hall built into a former gas holder, and Landek hill in the north is linked with the region's early mining. Poruba, the post-war district to the west, was planned around a grand boulevard and an arched gateway.
