Pag runs for roughly sixty kilometres parallel to the mainland, a thin sliver of rock separated from the Velebit coast by a narrow channel. On a map it reads as a long, ragged ribbon, its outline broken again and again by coves, headlands and long inlets that push deep into the island's body.
The middle of the island is split almost in two by Pag Bay, a long sheltered inlet with the town of Pag near its southern end. The town's compact street pattern stands out against the open ground around it. To the north, Novalja and its beaches fill a wider, gentler stretch of coast, while the southern tip reaches the mainland by a road bridge.
