Pelabuhanratu sits on the south coast of West Java, in Sukabumi Regency, on a broad bay that opens onto the Indian Ocean. It is the seat of the regency and an important fishing port. On the map the town follows the curve of the shore, with the harbour, markets and main streets along the water and steep hills rising a short way inland.
This coast is closely tied to the legend of Nyi Roro Kidul, the Queen of the Southern Sea, a figure deeply rooted in Javanese belief. Local tradition says visitors should not wear green on the beach, and a room in the Samudra Beach Hotel has long been set aside in her honour. Every year fishermen hold a sea offering ceremony known as Hari Nelayan.

The port, with its breakwaters and basins, is a compact geometric shape on the shoreline. It is the working heart of a town where fishing has long been the main livelihood.
Cimandiri river mouth
One of the larger rivers of southern West Java meets the sea close to the town. Its final bends add a soft, winding line to the edge of the map.
