Penang Island lies off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, at the northern entrance to the Strait of Malacca. It is roughly oval, with a steep, forested core of hills. Its towns and roads cling to the flatter coastal edges, especially along the east side, which faces the mainland across a narrow channel.
George Town, founded by the British East India Company in 1786, occupies the northeastern cape. Its historic core was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008, together with Melaka. On a map it is a tight grid of shophouse streets, clan houses and jetties, which gives way to newer districts spreading south and west along the shore.
Two long road bridges, the Penang Bridge and the Second Penang Bridge, link the island to the mainland, and ferries still cross from George Town.
