Phichit is the capital of Phichit Province in the lower north of Thailand, on the broad central plain. The Nan River flows through the area from north to south, and the town is laid out along its banks. On a map, the river is a strong curved line, and the town's streets form a moderately regular grid next to it, with a railway running through the area.
Just south of the modern town is the old city of Phichit, now a historical park, where the remains of earthen walls and moats are still visible. Phichit is associated with the Thai folk tale of Krai Thong and the crocodile Chalawan, and this story is well known throughout the country. Around the town, the plain is covered with rice paddies and wetlands.
