This Pingshan is in Chongqing, in the hilly country on the eastern side of the Sichuan Basin. Here, the land shapes almost every street. From above, the town follows valley floors and gentle slopes, and roads curve around hills instead of crossing them. The built-up area takes the shape of the ground it sits on.
Around the town, the landscape is typical of rural Chongqing: rounded hills, terraced fields cut into the slopes, and small villages scattered along the valleys. Water collects in ponds and small reservoirs. These show on a map as smooth solid shapes among the curving field boundaries and roads.
