Pinheiro lies in the Baixada Maranhense, a low-lying region in the Brazilian state of Maranhão shaped by rivers, lakes and fields that flood in the rainy season. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets set against a landscape where water and land are constantly shifting, and where the line between the two changes with the time of year.
The town sits by the Pericumã River, and the surrounding area is crossed by channels and wetlands that give the map an organic, flowing quality. Roads leading out of Pinheiro run across this flat land toward neighbouring towns, often in long straight stretches over the lowlands, which contrast with the curving waterways around them.
