Piotrków Trybunalski owes the second part of its name to the Crown Tribunal, the highest court of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, which sat here from 1578. Before that, the town hosted many sessions of the royal parliament. On a map, the old town stands out as a compact oval of narrow streets around a square market place, still partly marked by the line of its former walls.
Near the old town is the Royal Castle, a Renaissance tower built for King Sigismund I and now a museum. The small River Strawa runs nearby, and green spaces follow the old line of the fortifications. Around this core the city spreads out in later grids, apartment estates and industrial areas.
