Pitimbu sits on the southern coast of Paraíba, close to the border with Pernambuco, where the Brazilian shoreline runs almost straight north to south. From above, the town is a narrow settlement pressed against the Atlantic. A few streets run parallel to the sand, and short lanes lead inland from them until the buildings give way to vegetation and farmland.
The coast here is not one unbroken beach. Small rivers and estuaries cut through it, and on a map they appear as pale gaps in the line of the shore. In black and white the sea becomes a large, calm field on one side of the sheet. The built area thins out as it moves away from it, which gives the composition a clear direction.
