Pleiku is the capital of Gia Lai Province in Vietnam's Central Highlands, set on a high plateau of volcanic soil. From above, the city spreads around a crossing of national highways, with a fairly compact centre and neighbourhoods that open out quickly into plantations. The rolling land is patterned with coffee, pepper and rubber farms, giving the edges of the map a fine, repeated texture.
North of the city lies Biển Hồ, also known as T'Nưng Lake, a nearly round lake formed in an old volcanic crater and an important water source for the area. The highlands around Pleiku are home to several indigenous communities, including the Jarai and Bahnar peoples, and the city serves as a hub for the region.
